Johann Krugell
Business Analyst & IT Lead, Acurio Health

About Acurio
Acurio Health, an independent healthcare group, operates both the Sydney Day Hospital on Macquarie Street and a large, long-stay facility in Gregory Hills, featuring 35 beds, 5 theatres, and 2 endoscopy suites. As a fast-growing business with a lean operational structure, Acurio needed a smarter approach to IT management, one that offered leadership, design expertise, and hands-on execution without the cost of a full in-house team. The Challenge
Acurio was previously locked into a single IT provider and lacked internal technical resources, including a CIO or formal IT department. Most of the IT decision-making and coordination fell to Johann Krugell, who manages business analysis and operations across the hospitals.
Without a clear IT strategy or process structure, Acurio struggled with:
- A lack of documented knowledge and formal change control
- Reliance on ad hoc vendor input
- Delays and inefficiencies in procurement and infrastructure upgrades
- • Critical IT issues like unreliable Wi-Fi, unsecured remote access, and aging hardware
“We couldn’t get out of the weeds. Fixing daily issues like Wi-Fi took all our time, leaving no room for longer-term improvements.”
The Solution
Addcom was brought on to provide CIO-level leadership, strategic oversight, and act as Acurio’s IT partner, without replacing the existing IT services provider.
Key elements of the engagement included:
- CIO-as-a-Service: Addcom guided Acurio’s IT roadmap, reviewed infrastructure, and coordinated vendor activity.
- Vendor Oversight: Rather than replace the managed service provider, Addcom acted as a layer above to lead and design solutions.
- Hardware Strategy: Worked with Acurio on upcoming PC replacement, lease-to-own models, and printer fleet standardisation.
- Security & Remote Access: Designed and deployed a secure, elegant solution for remote access to patient monitoring systems.
- Structured Change Management: Introduced formal processes for change requests, upgrades, and IT documentation.
“Before, we had no strategy. Now, there’s a clear direction and the right expertise on tap, whether it’s for telephony, Citrix decommissioning, or Azure Virtual Desktop rollout.”
Impact & Outcomes
With Addcom’s support, Acurio has transitioned from a reactive IT model to one that is strategic, secure, and scalable.
Key outcomes include:
- Operational Relief: Internal teams now spend less time troubleshooting and more time focused on growth
- Network Stability: Persistent Wi-Fi issues were resolved with smart design and implementation, no complaints since
- Elegant Remote Access: Doctors can now securely access live monitoring data via a two-factor system built around email and SMS verification
- Strategic Capacity: Acurio is now planning cost-saving initiatives and long-term improvements instead of fire-fighting
- IT Hardware Fleet Optimisation: A leasing model replaced costly, unpredictable break/fix workflows
“Addcom doesn’t just push buttons; they understand the connection between IT and business outcomes. That’s what makes them different.”
Why It Worked
- Design-First Thinking: Addcom focused on long-term fixes, not temporary patches
- Cost-Aware Leadership: Recognised Acurio’s budget constraints and balanced thoroughness with efficiency
- Vendor-Agnostic Flexibility: Guided the design and direction while allowing Acurio to retain existing providers
- Deep Business Alignment: Understood clinical environments and the practical impact of IT issues on patient care
Currently in the Works
One of Acurio’s critical challenges was enabling its clinicians, particularly doctors and nurses, to access patient monitoring data remotely, without compromising security or relying on unreliable workarounds. Addcom has designed and implemented a secure, real-time access solution tailored to the needs of hospital staff and the existing K2 patient monitoring system.
The solution allows authorised clinical staff to view monitoring data remotely using a secure, two-factor authentication process, including SMS and email verification, ensuring compliance and peace of mind.
“We needed a way for our doctors to access data from outside the hospital, safely and efficiently. Addcom delivered an elegant solution that works without the need for clunky VPNs or risky shortcuts,” said Johann.
This initiative not only reduced pressure on the internal team but also improved clinician efficiency and patient responsiveness, particularly during after-hours situations or when specialists weren’t physically on-site.
A Partner That Solves, Not Just Supplies
What stood out most to Acurio wasn’t just the range of services Addcom could offer, it was the ability to problem-solve creatively and tailor solutions to exact needs, even when requirements fell outside standard offerings.

From resolving long-standing Wi-Fi challenges to enabling secure remote access for clinicians, Addcom took the time to understand the root cause of each issue and develop fit-for-purpose solutions, not generic quick fixes. Whether it involved infrastructure, connectivity, hardware, security, or third-party systems, Addcom consistently demonstrated flexibility, accountability, and follow-through.
“They don’t just offer a catalogue of products, they look at your problem and figure out what will actually work. We needed a partner who could think strategically but act tactically too, and that’s exactly what Addcom does,” said Johann.
With each project, Addcom proved that it can scale its support, customise its approach, and respond with urgency—regardless of the request.
Looking Ahead
As Acurio matures, the partnership is evolving. Addcom now holds the strategic knowledge of Acurio’s systems and is positioned to continue leading future IT improvements, while giving internal leaders like Johann the bandwidth to shift focus.
“Eventually, I’ll be able to step away from day-to-day IT entirely. Addcom will run the show, and I’ll just catch up quarterly to review strategy.”
Final Recommendation
“Yes, I’d recommend Addcom, especially to businesses without internal IT leadership. They’ll challenge your providers, guide your strategy, and understand how IT fits into your business.”
